Great question! And yes I believe that it is! In the old days, insulin was made by slaughtering pigs and cattle and extracting their insulin. This was using up loads of cattle and not enough insulin was being made anyway! Then patients could develop immune reaction aginst this animal insulin. So then genetic engineering fixed those problems and now we make it using recombinant DNA. Its more effective in patients with fewer immune reactions and is also less expensive.
