Coughing is a defense mechanism. Its when our body tries to get rid of something foreign that has found its way into our body through the nose or mouth. Stuff like bacteria or irritant chemical particles are some of the things causing irritation to the throat. Coughing makes us push air out of the lungs under high pressure so those irritants can be blown outside of our body.
